About Us
Special Olympics Calgary has grown to become Alberta's largest Special Olympics program, now supporting over 650 athletes. As Calgary grows, so does the need for rewarding, high-quality sports programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics is not a one-time event. The Calgary organization offers 32 individual programs in 17 sports year round to athletes of all ages and abilities. Since many of our athletes participate in more than one sport, our active participant count amounts to more than 1,500.
Special Olympics promotes sport as a way to foster many skills and qualities that can enhance athletes' daily lives - qualities such as sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and self confidence. The organization's 270 volunteers offer the compassion, commitment and skilled coaching that help athletes flourish and grow.
Special Olympics Calgary is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1981 as an affiliate of Special Olympics Alberta. The Calgary athletes are part of a worldwide Special Olympics movement that started in the United States in 1968 and now includes more than 1.6 million people in 160 countries. |
