Become an Athlete

Taking part in Special Olympics Calgary creates opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to build new friendships and participate in physical activity – all in their local community. It gives them the chance to learn new skills and discover their potential by becoming an athlete with Special Olympics.

As an athlete, you have the opportunity to train and compete in a sport on a weekly basis within your community, at a level appropriate for you. Special Olympics Calgary is focused on providing a fun, engaging, positive and healthy environment for all participants.

How do the programs work?

Special Olympics was founded on the principles of fair, equitable training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. To achieve this we use a process called divisioning. Skill evaluations take place at the beginning of each program year for all sports. The evaluations assist coaches in determining where the athletes are placed, to ensure everyone has a chance to be challenged and experience achievements throughout the year.

An individual may participate in more than one sport - space permitting. All individuals are expected to comply with the Special Olympics Code of Conduct, which aims to create a positive, nurturing and supportive environment for every participant.

Programs are open to individuals’ of all skill levels with an intellectual disability ages 2 and up. For more information and program costs please contact the main office at (403) 735-1022 or e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Programs are open to individuals with an intellectual disability and are designed to increase fitness levels, develop individual and/or team skills and to promote sportsmanship and fair play. No person shall, on the grounds of gender, race, religion, ability level, or financial constraint be excluded from participation. We offer programs to ages 2 and up. Individuals must be 8 years of age to participate in specific sport programs.

We host an annual athlete registration day in the beginning of September in order to allow an equal opportunity for everyone to sign up for our programs. Letters and forms will be sent to coaches, athletes and volunteers at least 3 weeks before registration day. It is strongly recommended that athletes register on registration day to assist in the registration process and programming, and to help them ensure their spot in their program.
